Our Locomotives
Currently our stable of locomotives consists of two battery electric locomotives and a diesel hydraulic locomotive.
The Tram locomotive, loosely resembling a Drewry Locomotive is powered by a 1HP Bosch motor driven by two 85Amp. leisure batteries. This was our first loco and did all the donkey work in constructing our Railway. It pulled ballast, track sections and now occasionally pulls passengers. She is more than capable of pulling a fully loaded train, two carriages and a driving truck, on our line all day.
The Class 15 locomotive is from a modified Bexhill Engineering kit. It has the nose dipped in classic 15 style and has fully working 'running lights', both ends. This loco is powered by four Fasco 250W motors directly driving each axle, giving about 1.1/3HP. Power is supplied by two 100 Amp/Hr. leisure batteries giving 24 volts. This locomotive has seen regular service on the Railway and currently pulls passenger trains.
Our newest acquisition is a 'sit in' diesel powered 0-4-0 locomotive. Made by an engineer in Sidcup she is our most powerful loco by far. Her 4HP diesel engine can pull a fully loaded train on tick-over! The Diesel engine drives an Eaton Hydraulic Gearbox via a lay shaft to all four wheels. With the driver sitting in the locomotive, wheel slip is unheard of. We have just decided on the name GNAT, as the original design was based on a small industrial locomotive model of that name, manufactured by Steve Bennett of Pepper7, and with the slight wisp of pale blue smoke from the exhaust she looks just great winding through the avenue of trees.
So pleased are we with the performance, we have ordered another locomotive to be delivered for our running season in 2010.
